Mosaic cartograms are a great visualisation that takes the advantages of choropleth maps but scales countries by population to give a quick reading of the number of affected people.

This project is about creating a tool that uses our population dataset to create cartogram maps for arbitrary years. The output of this tool should be a grid of squares that represent a world map where each square represents a fixed number of people. Countries and continents should then be placed on this grid in such a way that their size corresponds to the population in that year and outlines and placement are close to actual geographic outlines so that it is easy to find and identify countries quickly.

Prioritized tasks for @addu390 to work on:

Nice-to-haves that other developers could implement :

  • Improve the UX of the cartogram editor
    • Tool selection
