Hi Lou,

Thanks again for your help and the lessons! Here are the other three changes mentioned in my original message that still need to be done.

  1. add a "looking for" field, i.e., for people to list seeds or varieties that they are looking for so people who may not have listed seeds, but might have them, can contact those looking for particular varieties

  2. add a "bringing seed to November seed exchange?" field; this will allow people to tell us if they are bringing a particular variety to the November seed exchange > Probably a checkbox. I think if those results just show up as another column with the heading "Available at Next Seed Swap?" with a check mark or bullet indicating yes, that should be fine.

  3. we would ideally like everyone's user name to be their first and last name, if this is technically feasible

I did part of this -- will finish it tomorrow. You will now see an Events tab at the top with the November Seed Exchange listed

  1. You can fix the date in the admin panel (you should do that)
  2. If you want to use the admin panel to list a seed for the event, you can (look at Seed at Events)

I am working on letting you list the seed using the site

Hi Lou,

Yep. I can see how to change the dates through the admin panel for future events. That looks very easy for me and other board members to keep up.

I can also where to list seeds for the event from the admin side, but doing so wouldn't be practical. A list of seeds available at the event would be built from seed savers all over the area who are bringing things to the swap, not just admins. Also hard to tell how to "change" a seed from the admin side without anything listed to work on.
Let me know when it evolves to the point of having that as a checkbox on the "Add a Seed" form. Thanks!

I think seed events are done

  1. You should use the Admin to fix the date for the November exchange
  2. You should test adding a seed and including it in the exchange
  3. you should test editing a seed and including and removing it
  4. You should test the events page

You should never change a date for an event to the next year. Leave the old one there and list a new event with the new date. If you don't want the event on the edit page, use the admin to unlist it (there is a checkbox for that)

There needs to be a username -- I can't login with first/last name.

Hi,

Ok. I'll explain it to them. There was some debate over this point at the meeting last night, and they decided that being rigid about real names as usernames wasn't as necessary as they thought it was before.

Hi Lou,

Thanks again for doing all this.

Ran the tests just now, only found one minor hitch on #3.

  1. Fixing the date was no problem.
  2. Adding a seed and including it in the exchange was no problem.
  3. Editing the seed and removing it from the exchange by unclicking the box was no problem, but Archiving the seed didn't remove it from the exchange. Only unchecking the box did that. Not sure if that would cause confusion if people decide to archive a seed (a swap deal made before the exchange event or so). Is there a way to put a rule in there to not include Archived seeds in events??
  4. Events page seems to function just fine.
I noticed the "Add New Event" function on the events admin page. It makes it so easy to create and edit! The new event I entered and told to include on the List a New Seed form showed up right away and then disappeared when I removed it.

Seeing how easy it was to add events, the group started talking about listing all the other events during the year.

Had the first training session at last night's meeting and everyone was VERY impressed with the ease of use and range of functions of the seed bank. They're very grateful for your continued work on this as well. We have at least one other person who immediately raised his hand to be an Admin. He's quite web-site savvy and thought the controls were nice and simple to use. It's finally being announced publicly as being officially launched and we have more training sessions set up.

Thanks again.
It's fantastic!

Rose

PS - If you don't mind, what's your mailing address? The group would at least like to send a thank you card for your work.

Lou — I just thought of one thing that would be great if it can be included. On the Events page, would it be possible to allow a paragraph when adding a new event. We have seed swaps, plant swaps, movie presentations, seed saving workshops and book discussions, so it would be nice to add a brief description to each if possible.

Let me know. Thanks!

  1. archiving a seed / event page -- this is a good question. The events are meant to also be a historical record of what happened. So if you want to know what was brought to last year's Nov seed swap, everything would still be listed (even if it was later archived). So, I could check the date -- if it's before the event, remove it from the event -- if it's after the event, don't remove it from the event automatically (you still can do that manually if you want)
  2. a paragraph is easy -- will do that this weekend
  3. I am still working on the "Looking for" that will come
  4. I emailed you my address.

  1. Ah!! That makes sense. I think leaving it as-is will work fine. (Hadn't thought of archiving the record of the event.
  2. Great, thanks!
  3. I'd forgotten about that, but yes, that would be a greatly appreciated feature.
  4. Got it. Thanks again! :)

I added a description for events. You can put it in with the admin panel and it will show up on the events page
